About Our Church

Welcome to Lincoln Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ.

At Lincoln, we believe that every member is a minister, called to live out faith through love, justice, service, and community. Our doors swing open on welcome hinges—wide enough to receive all whom God is still drawing in. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome at Lincoln.

We are a vibrant, inclusive congregation in South L. A., committed to thoughtful worship, meaningful relationships, and faithful action in the world. We gather for worship every Sunday at 11:00 a.m., both in person and online via Facebook Live, and we would be honored to welcome you into our community—just as you are.

“It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth forever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD; So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.”

2 Chronicles 5:13-14

Learn About Our History

The Beginning | December 1, 1912

“We have come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord trusting in his holy word.”

Lincoln Memorial Congregational Church was organized on December 1, 1912 under the name Metropolitan Congregational by Rev. J.D. Pettigrew. At the time and for more than 30 years it was the only predominantly Black Congregational Church west of the Rocky Mountains.

When first organized, the church met in a home on what was then called “The West Side”. From there, it moved to a storefront on Central Avenue and was renamed Lincoln Memorial Congregational Church. As membership grew, the church moved to a church building, which still stands today on 34th Street just east of Central Avenue.

In October 1915, Rev. E.E. Lightner accepted the call and assumed duties of pastor. In October 1927, the church moved to a larger building on the corner of Vernon and Hooper Avenue. Rev. Lightner served as pastor until his death in 1942.

1937 to 1962...

In 1943, Rev. Lloyd Galloway became pastor and served for more than 40 years. During his time at Lincoln the church became part of the United Church of Christ. The current structure was erected in 1964 and the church also acquired additional property.

1962 to 1987...

Since Rev. Galloway’s retirement, pastors who have served are Rev. Monte Norwood, Rev. Charles Mattison and Rev. Dr. Lawrence Foy.

In June 1995, Lincoln called Rev. Gailen Reevers to its pastorate. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Rev. Reevers has taken Lincoln to new heights. We added the Family Life Center, renovated the inside of the sanctuary and transformed the parking lot.

1987 to 2012...

During its history, Lincoln has always served the needs of the greater community. It has provided free meals for school children during The Depression, provided leadership and facilities for YMCA and YWCA in the 1940’s and 50’s. Our Pilgrim Fellowship attracted young people from all parts of the city and at times was 100 members strong.

Lincoln has partnered with many organizations to offer programs and services to families in South LA.  Some of our partnerships are The Lincoln Family Life Center, Assurance Learning Academy, Netiya, Charles Drew University and UCLA.

Our Team & Leadership |  Who We Are

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

Welcome to Lincoln Memorial Congregational Church, United Church of Christ where every member is a minister.

We greet you in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.  It is our prayer that you will be inspired to visit us at 11 AM on any Sunday you choose.  If you can’t make it on a Sunday we have other opportunities for you to worship and fellowship with us.

Senior Pastor

Rev. Miller has been an active member of Lincoln Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ since November of 2008 and has been the church’s senior servant since 2019.  He was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  While living in Atlanta, Georgia, he worked for a national health insurance company in various capacities including sales.

It was during this time that he accepted God’s call to ministry, served local churches and completed the Master of Divinity at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC).

In addition to serving Lincoln, he has worked in the non-profit sector for over a decade, advocating for individuals living with and at high risk of HIV; and amplifying the voices of local faith communities through organizing.

Pastor Emeritus

Gailen L. Reevers was born in Detroit, Michigan and received his elementary and secondary education in its public schools.  He was a graduate of Wayne State University, having earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology; California State University Dominguez Hills, with a Master of Science in Administration; and Fuller Theological Seminary, with a Master of Arts in Theology.  He began his ministerial journey at Paradise Baptist where he served in many capacities from 1977-1984.  In 1983, he was ordained into the United Church of Christ (UCC) and accepted the call to pastor Pilgrim Congregational UCC in 1984 where he served for ten years. In 1995, Reverend Reevers answered God’s call to pastor Lincoln Memorial Congregational UCC and it was by his dedication to God, being led by the Holy Spirit and love for Jesus Christ, that Lincoln began to flourish.

This began with his insistence that all members become active participants in the work of the church. “Every Member is a Minister” was his mantra and this philosophy continues to be embraced by the church.   With the completion of the Family Life Center building in 1999, the church established the Lincoln Family Life Center, Inc. as a separate community development corporation, which continued its legacy of service, offering educational programs for youth; parental support workshops; political engagement symposiums;  and became home to charter schools committed to educating students from our immediate community.  This accomplishment was the manifestation of Rev. Reevers’ dream to impact our community and its people in the greatest ways possible.

In 2017, in honor of the God-glorifying service and commitment of Rev. Gailen and Mrs. Cathy Reevers, the Lincoln Family Life Center was renamed, and the building rededicated The Gailen and Cathy Reevers Center for Community Empowerment (GCRC).  After 23 years of service, Rev. Reevers retired on September 30, 2018.  He was called from labor to rest on May 8, 2021.

He also led the church in building the Lincoln Family Life Center and establishing The Lincoln Family Life Center, a 501C3 nonprofit organization that has organized and implemented various community outreach programs such as Youth Mentoring Advocacy Project (YMAP), health programs including Fit 4 Life, arts programs for youth and education programs for all ages.

Rev. Reevers is married to Cathy and they have two sons.

As associate pastor,  I work with and under the direction of the senior pastor as a member of the pastoral team to enable the church to focus on the Great Commission and to equip the church to carry out the functions of the New Testament church in evangelism, discipleship, ministry, fellowship, and worship.

Peace!
